When Topps released the second series, it received marginal response as
Garbage Pail Kids were just becoming popular. The first print run had
MESSY TESSIE
as the puzzle on the back. When the demand picked up, a second print run
was released, this time with
LIVE MIKE
as the puzzle. The 18 puzzle piece cards and the 2 puzzle previews can be
found in both versions.

|
A third print release was issued to remove
SCHIZO FRAN.
Schizophrenia was too touchy of a topic, so Topps pulled the card and
replaced it with
FRAN FRAN.

Topps added copyright date (©) to the 3rd series cards, but forgot to
include them on puzzle pieces and puzzle previews. They were added to those
cards on the front in the bottom lefthand corner halfway through the first
print run. Because those cards without copyrights were only available in
part of the first print run, these error cards are usually hard to find and
in poor condition.
NOTE: Most scans are of those cards without a copyright. Although
there are two versions, only one image was scanned in order to save disk
space.

Lawsuits by Cabbage Patch Kids prompted Topps to change names to avoid
further problems. A new print run was issued, and the names
WOODY ALAN
(actor Woody Alan),
REESE PIECES
(brand name Reese's Pieces),
CRYSTAL GALE
(musician Crystal Gale), and
SALVATORE DOLLY
(artist Salvadore Dali)
were changed to
OAK KAY,
PUZZLED PAUL,
IG LOU, and
BATTERED BRAD
, respectively.
The 4th series checklist was updated as well to represent these four name
changes. WOODY ALAN/OAK KAY was a checklist; the other 3 wereT
HOLLY WOOD,
ALIEN IAN, and
OUTERSPACE CHASE.

The 4th series had a printing error as well, maybe due to the reprint. No
one else has noticed this error on other sites, but
I have 2 cards with a numbering error. The cards below have an alias with
the wrong number. You can click on each card to view a larger photo.

A printing error during one of the print
runs resulted in SEMI COLIN
having the card number missing. Some collectors have excused this card as a
coloring error, stating that the number is merely faded. Regardless, this
error card has to be the hardest GPK out there.

As you can see on your left,
FLAMIN' RAYMOND (384a) and
HOT TODDY (384b)
had a printing error. One card has the complete coloring on it
whereas the error card has a white box where no coloring was printed.

The term die-cut refers to the cut-out of the card.
Each Garbage Pail Kid had a 'PEEL HERE' arrow. The die-cut allowed you to
pull off the sticker and stick it on your notebook or whatever. The border
that remained was the outline of the card. If you look just below the card
number on the cards to your left, you can see that the first one is die-cut
and the second is not! (You can also click on each picture to see a closeup)
15th Series cards were unique in that some cards were die-cut and some cards
were not. One print run had cards that were both die-cut non die-cut. A
collector can obtain a whole set of each. Although the non die-cut is the error
card, die-cut 15th series cards seem a lot harder to come by.
NOTE: Most scans are of the non die-cut cards. Although there are two
versions, only one image was scanned in order to save disk space.
